This article talks about the relations between whites, slaves, and free blacks in Pass Christian, MS, which is on the Coast. You'll find whites leaving slaves to black in their wills, etc..... Read all of it if possible, but the beginning mainly discusses how the white folks settled the area and then about page 8 or so begins a lot of the discussion about free blacks owning slaves and so forth.
